Based in Novi, Michigan, ITC Holdings Corporation* is the nation’s largest independent electricity transmission company. ITC serves a combined peak load over 25,000 megawatts in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. Its core mission is to improve the reliability and reach of the electric transmission grid, while lowering the cost of delivered energy. When you think of renewable energy, it is tempting to focus on towering windmills or shiny solar panels, but ITC demonstrates the multitude of ways to invest in the green economy. ITC is currently developing the “Green Power Express,” a grid development project aimed at linking 12,000 MWs (enough to power about 9 to 12 million homes) of wind power potential in the Midwest with major demand centers in the region. While many Midwestern states have set “green portfolio” targets, their existing transmission capabilities cannot currently support the quantity or the distribution range of the additional wind capacity required to meet those targets. With the Green Power Express, ITC hopes to help usher in a sustainable energy economy. Regulators have begun to approve a version of this proposal, though ITC is optimistic that the Green Power Express will ultimately be implemented in its entirety. ITC also seeks to mitigate the impacts of its daily operations, to the extent feasible. The company opts for environmentally-friendly materials, and looks to reuse materials whenever possible. ITC ensures that all waste, if it cannot be reused or recycled, is properly stored, handled and disposed of. It also seeks to reduce carbon emissions, including working with its business partners and the public to share technologies and best practices.
